Author Biography
Chapiro Jacques (1897-1972) - French painter of Latvian origin. He created portraits, genre paintings and interiors. Born in Daugavpils, Latvia. He studied at art schools in Kharkiv (1915) and Kyiv (1918). Supervised drawing school in Dnipropetrovsk (1919). He arrived to Petrograd, continued his studies at State Art Institute and supervised children's art school (1921). He studied set design in Petrograd and Moscow theatres (1920s). He participated in exhibitions (since 1922). Moved to France (1925) where he settled in the commune house «La Ruche». Since 1926, the artist was exhibiting in the Autumn saloon, the Salon des Tuileries, the Salon des Indépendants. He met S. Dyagilev and co-worked with his «Russian ballet». Took part in operation of the Jewish Artists Association. Published a book of memoirs about life of the famous 1920 artists colony La Ruche (1960). His works are presented at the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris and the Art Institute of Chicago.
