Simkhovych Simka (Simkha Faibusovych Simkhovych) (1885-1949) is an immigrant artist. Born in a Jewish family in Novozybkov, Russia. At the age of seven, he sketched the scenery outside his window and decided to become an artist. He studied at the Odesa Art School named after Grekova (1905-1911). Enrolled in courses in architecture, painting, and sculpture at the Imperial Academy, he was later expelled because of the quota for the number of Jewish students and drafted into the army. After reentering the Imperial Academy, he audited classes. Participant of personal and group exhibitions in the USSR, Europe and the USA (since 1918). In 1924, Simkhovich came to the United States to make illustrations for Soviet textbooks and decided to immigrate, where he gained great popularity. The artist's works are in the permanent collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, the National Museum of American Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
