Press release
Exhibition project "Leonid Kozlov. Labyrinths of time."

From March 20 to April 12, the Goldens auction house will host the exhibition project "Labyrinths of Time" by the Ukrainian sculptor and artist Leonid Kozlov.

Leonid Kozlov is known primarily as a master of realistic sculpture on the theme of ballet. But his output includes abstract compositions of a high level of skill, as well as paintings. The purpose of the exhibition project "Labyrinths of Time" was to reveal this little-known but significant side of the artist's work.

While studying in the workshop of Anatoliy Fuzhenka (since 1969) and Vasyl Borodai (1982), he received an extremely powerful professional base, which laid a plastic foundation for his creativity. But his own view and perception of reality, form and color, life in other realities and openness to creative and conceptual searches transformed this experience and paved the way for the artist to a completely new level.

Leonid Kozlov gained his first fame thanks to his realistic sculptures on the theme of ballet. Filled not only with the usual grace for their role, but also with dynamism and life, his ballerinas entered a wide circle of art connoisseurs and collectors. In 2021, Leonid Kozlov's sculpture "Black Swan" became the most expensive sculpture sold at open Ukrainian auctions during the entire existence of the Ukrainian art market.

All the more interesting is the transformation of the artist's creative method and his transition from the traditions of realistic sculpture to abstraction. He compensates for the lack of a realistic form with content that would be cramped within the framework of a classical visual image.

The exhibition presents abstract sculptural compositions of the 1990s, in which Leonid Kozlov experiments with form, breaking the traditional idea of the figure. Here you can see archetypal female images that refer to primitive art, and the concept of motherhood in Jungian optics, and the visualization of male-female relations in the language of laconic volumes.

Despite the fact that Leonid Kozlov is known primarily as a sculptor, painting also occupies a significant place in his creative work. At the exhibition, he is represented by abstract works of the period 2007-2020. In the context of the artist's path, the names of the two most recent works of the selection are perceived quite symbolically: "Walking" and "Enlightenment", which seem to emphasize the artist's path full of searches.

Based on the achievements of the classics of non-figurative art Piet Mondrian, Barnett Newman and Paul Klee, the artist creates his own visual language. Laconic forms, bright and monochrome color planes, moderate but expressive dynamics and expressive texture form a recognizable and unique handwriting. Complex textures, which the artist integrates into the layers of the canvas, are also an important component of the ordered visual and symbolic language: sawdust, earth, sand.

The project "Labyrinths of Time" is represented by 17 painting and 5 sculptural compositions of the artist. The exhibition is open from Monday to Saturday from March 20 to April 12 from 12:00 to 19:00.
