Auction 69 "Ukrainian Collectible Graphics and Ceramics"

From August 20 to September 4, the Goldens auction house will host an auction of Ukrainian collectible graphics and ceramics. The collection includes over 90 works by over 50 authors — from classics to contemporary artists, each of whom represents not only artistic but also collectible value.

Ukrainian ceramics have deep roots in folk art, but during the 20th century it was actively transformed under the influence of changes in society and art. From traditional forms — dishes, tiles, toys — masters gradually moved on to author's ceramics, where individual styles, new techniques, and modern themes appeared. During the Soviet period, ceramics often remained on the periphery of "great art," but this gave artists the opportunity to experiment with form and content relatively more freely.

Since the 1960s, decorative ceramics have gained special importance - panels, small-scale sculptures, household and architectural decor. In some cases, ceramics have become a space for semi-hidden ideas that did not pass through official pictorial art. Today, interest in Ukrainian ceramics is growing: the works of masters of the last century are becoming collectibles, and modern artists work with ceramics as a full-fledged media.

The auction selection includes works by such prominent Ukrainian sculptors and ceramists as: I. Kavaleridze, Yu. Ruban, D. Krvavych, V. Omelyanenko, T. Demchenko, I. Bilyk, M. Galushko, G. Sevruk, O. Ruban, O. Rapai, A. Rybachuk and V. Melnychenko, G. Miminoshvili, N. Murashkina, V. Sai, V. Khyzhynskyi and N. Ispupova.

Ukrainian graphics has its own path of formation, which largely falls on staying in the shadow of painting and monumental art. But its undeniable advantage is in the flexibility of techniques, small format and the ability to quickly respond to changes in society. In particular, in the interwar period, Ukrainian graphics actively developed both in Soviet Ukraine and in emigration - in particular in the works of Oleksiy Hryshchenko or Vasyl Khmelyuk. In the post-war years, the emphasis shifted to book illustration, bookplates, and easel graphics, where artists sought a balance between official requirements and their own intonations.

Since the 1960s, a whole generation of artists has appeared who rethink graphics not only as a technique, but also as an autonomous art. They experiment with line, texture, color, and often in graphics they allow themselves more freedom than in painting. Today, Ukrainian graphics is a wide range of practices: from classical etching to digital techniques.

The auction selection includes works by: K. Piskorsky, O. Hryshchenko, O. Pavlenko, V. Kasiyan, S. Kyrychenko, V. Khmelyuk, M. Derehus, I. Marchuk, O. Minko, O. Zakharchuk, M. Glushchenko, V. Zaretsky, F. Tetyanych, S. Get, O. Aksinin, M. Prymachenko, K. Protsenko, V. Khrushch, M. Rapai, M. Turovsky, O. Sukholit, M. Bilous, P. Makov, Etchingroom1 (K. Yarosh, A. Khodkova) and others.

The top lots of the current auction were rare works: M. Prymachenko's work "Wild Uncle Climbed into Peas..." (1993), ironic and expressive "Cosmonaut" and "Swimmer" by the art group ETCHINGROOM1 (K. Yarosh and A. Khodkova) (2025), P. Makov's etching "Old Map. From the series "Utopia" (2015), "Christmas" by I. Isupov (2024), "Triple Musicians" (1970s) by V. Zaretsky, sketch by F. Tetyanych for the panel at the station "Hnata Yury" (1970s), "Landscape" by M. Glushchenko (1978), Plaque "Scene from Folk Life" by I. Marchuk (1960s), fantasy "Beast in Flowers" by M. Galushko (1980s) and "Flower Bird" by Nelli Isupova (2000s), vase by N. Murashkina "Hero" (2022) and bowl by ARVM "Nothing, including wisdom, is given to the human race, higher than friendship (from "Thoughts of Cicero")" (1980s), tea set by O. Rapai for 18 items (1982) as well as three ceramic panels of her authorship, the iconic ceramic sculpture of the famous Lviv sculptor D. Krvavych "The Sun is Low" (1963).
