Author Biography
Lagorio Lev (1826-1905) was a Ukrainian and Russian marine painter. Aivazovsky's first student, his apprentice, representative of the Cimmerian school of painting. He was born in Feodosia in the family of a Neapolitan vice-consul. Early on he showed his talent and inclination towards drawing, and entered the studio of I. Aivazovsky (1839-1840). He studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1843-1850) where he studied with M. Vorobyov, which he graduated with a large gold medal and the title of class artist of the 1st degree. In parallel, he studied with A. Sauerweide, B. Willewalde. In order to improve his skills as a mariner, he made a trip on the military frigate "The Menacing" (1845), and sailed on his own boat in the Gulf of Finland (1846). He was sent to the Caucasus (1950) "to write local species." The mountains of the Caucasus captured Lagorio forever. From 1853 to 1860, he was abroad on a retirement trip, from where he brought about 30 paintings, for which he received the title of professor of landscape painting. Beginning in the 1880s, Lagorio worked extensively in watercolor. He was a member of the Society of Russian Watercolorists. Honorary member of the Academy of Arts (since 1900). He had a workshop in Sudak, where he went every summer for sketches.
