Author Biography
Yuriy Ruban (1924-2006) is a Ukrainian sculptor. He was born in the city of Kyiv, in the family of the graphic designer Oleksandr Yakovych Ruban. Participant of the Second World War, received awards. He worked as a designer at the Keramik plant (1947-1949), alongside the famous Ukrainian sculptors I. Honchar, O. Muravyn and I. Kavaleridze, who became his friend and teacher. He worked as a ceramic artist at the "Kyivmiskoformlennya" plant (1950-1953), performed stucco decoration of the Kureniv bridge and the facade of the Verkhovna Rada building, VDNG pavilions and residential buildings on Khreshchatyk. He entered the Kyiv Art Institute, but was forced to withdraw his documents because of his repressed father. Member of the Kyiv Society of Artists (1956). Member of the SHU (since 1962). Since the end of the 60s, he has been actively working in monumental animalistic sculpture (the entrance to the Kyiv Zoo - the compositions "Bison" and "Lion with a Lioness", "Aquarius" in the park on Volodymyrska Street, residential areas (Bereznyaki, Bilychi), forest park zones and playgrounds of Kyiv, etc.). In general, by the mid-1990s, the sculptor created about a hundred animalistic monumental works in the USSR. He constantly participated in All-Union and Republican exhibitions of small forms, as well as in foreign ones: in Turkey, France, Sweden, Iran and Japan. The works of the sculptor of small forms are kept in 17 art and local history museums of Ukraine.
