Damien Stephen Hirst (born 1965) is an English artist. Born in Bristol, Great Britain. The most prominent member of the group "Young British Artists", and to this day the richest artist. Hirst was a leading figure in British art during the 1990s and gained international recognition. In the 1990s and until 2003, the artist's career was closely associated with the collector Charles Saatchi. Death is a major theme in Hirst's works. He rose to fame with his series of dead animals (including sharks, sheep, and cows) preserved in formaldehyde. The 4.3 meter long tiger shark became the flagship work of the Britart movement for the whole world. Its sale in 2004 made Hirst the most expensive living artist since John Jasper, whom he surpassed in 2008.
