Exhibition
Hryhorii Svitlytskyi. Poetics of the Ukrainian symbol
Press release
From June 28 to July 22, the Goldens auction house will host an exhibition of the works of the famous Ukrainian classic Hryhoriy Svitlytskyi "Poetics of the Ukrainian Symbol".
Hryhoriy Svitlytsky, growing up in a creative environment, was extremely gifted with talents. He studied music and drawing from the age of 6. Having graduated from Mykola Murashko's Kyiv School of Drawing, and later from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, Svitlytskyi belonged to the galaxy of artists who, at the beginning of the 20th century, took part in the process of formation and development of the Ukrainian school of painting. The artist was the first in Ukraine to receive the title of People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR. The famous landscape painter Arkhip Kuindzhi had a significant influence on the young artist. Their acquaintance later developed into a strong friendship and played an exceptional role in the creative development of the artist. At one time, Svitlytskyi worked in Kuindzhi's workshop.
Svitlytsky felt nature in a particularly subtle way, and this skill became a key factor in the master's work. His melodic and poetic landscapes are considered to be filled with symbols of the Ukrainian people - thatched cottages, churches, inns, fences and windmills. However, the artist goes further and fills these symbols with life, a kind of spirit of the place, which is easily read by the viewer. It is not for nothing that Hryhoriy Svitlytskyi is considered one of the outstanding Ukrainian masters of light painting. Having developed his own paint technology, he masterfully and uniquely conveyed light and color in his works, be it landscapes, portraits, still lifes or genre paintings. Thanks to his unique perception of light, the artist created deep and voluminous paintings full of lyricism.
Hryhoriy Petrovych himself said this about his work: "The leitmotif of my work is mainly a lyrical compositional landscape. Determining the images and colors of nature, I was a realist in my paintings, but my realism is always saturated with musicality." The motifs of the Ukrainian moonlit night deserve a special place among Svitlytskyi's landscapes. In the Ukrainian art of the first half of the 20th century, no one after Arkhip Kuindzhi, except Hryhoriy Svitlytskyi, paid so much attention to the mysterious beauty of the Ukrainian night. The artist made great efforts not to repeat the techniques he found, in each new work he presented a new variety of light effects of moonlight, demonstrating unforgettable impressions experienced in the atmosphere of solitude during long night observations. His works "Ukrainian Night" (1930s), "House. Night" (1922), "Sunset" (1940s) and other works included in the collection of the new project vividly reflect why Svitlytskyi is often called the poet of moonlit Ukrainian nights.
In his still lifes, Svitlytskyi not only improves the skill of the painter. Depicting flowers, he achieves post-impressionist skill. Its flowers and fruits seem alive, just frozen for a moment in the light. The influence of the Western European school of painting and their color styles, symbolizing the fragility and durability of the natural cycle of life, is noticeable in these works. In his genre works, Svitlytsky gravitated towards enlightenment. Depicting mainly scenes of rural life, the artist masterfully recreated the collective image of rural Ukraine, its hardworking people - as another symbol inherent in our country.
The artist's creativity has always been the focus of artistic life, first in Kyiv, and later in all of Ukraine. The restraint and nationalism of the subjects, the variety of genres of painting, the rich and bright color in Svitlytskyi's works, the vivacity, joy and realism of their execution - this is what attracts and captivates the audience in the work of Hryhoriy Svitlytskyi. It was his canvases that glorify the beauty of Ukrainian nature and rural life that became a visual model for cult directors of auteur cinema: Serhiy Paradzhanov, Yuriy Ilyenka, and Leonid Osyka. A significant part of the artist's creative heritage is preserved in museums of Ukraine.
Exhibition "Gryhoriy Svitlytskyi. The Poetics of the Ukrainian Symbol" is a unique event that brought together works from different periods of the artist's work, genres and techniques, which is a retrospective look at the artist's creative heritage. In total, the project presents 34 works of a high and even museum level, including paintings, sketches and watercolors. All works presented at the exhibition come from private collections of Ukraine.
The exposition is presented at the Goldens auction house from June 28 to July 22, 2023.
