Author Biography
Oleksandr Glyadyelov (born 1956) is a Ukrainian documentary photographer, photojournalist. Born in Legnica, Poland. Moved with his family to Kyiv (1974). Studied optics and instrument engineering at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. As a photographer, he covered military conflicts in Moldova, Nagorno-Karabakh, Chechnya, Kyrgyzstan, Somalia, South Sudan and Ukraine. Constantly cooperates with the international humanitarian organization "Doctors Without Borders" (since 1997), as well as with other international organizations: MSF, HRW, The Global Fund, UNAIDS, UNICEF. Addresses social issues: military conflicts, humanitarian crises, homeless children, prisons, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and hepatitis C epidemics, drug addiction. He does not consider himself a war photographer, although some of his works are devoted to wars and conflicts. Consciously takes photos with an analog camera on black and white film and prints his photos himself in his home photo lab in Kyiv. Teacher at Ukrainian photography schools "Victor Marushchenko School of Photography" and "Bird in Flight". The owner of numerous awards and distinctions: Grand Prix Ukrpressfoto-97, Hasselblad prize at the European photography competition Images'98 (Switzerland), Mother Jones 2001 Medal of Excellence (USA), OSI "Moving Walls 2002" (USA). Winner of the Shevchenko Prize for the photo project "Carousel" (2020). Lives and works in Kyiv.
