Biography of the author

Vasyl Krychevskyi (1872-1952) was a Ukrainian painter, graphic artist, and architect. The creator of the Ukrainian architectural modern style direction, the founder of Ukrainian professional university architectural and art education. The patriarch of the large Krychevsky family, which gave Ukrainian art a number of outstanding personalities. He was born in Slobozhanshchyna. He studied at the railway technical school (Kharkiv). He worked for architects S. I. Zagoskin, A. N. Spiegel, chief architectural assistant to academician Ol. M. Beketov. The works submitted for the entrance exam to the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts were recognized by the Scientific Council as works by a master who has training equivalent to an academic course. In 1903, he won the first prize at the competition for the building of the Poltava Zemstvo, which was built according to his plans and became an example of a new architectural style. Member of the Society of Ukrainian Architects (since 1918). Author of the small and large Coats of Arms and seal of the Ukrainian People's Republic (1918). One of the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts, he was the first rector, head of the department, teacher. Professor, Doctor of Art Studies (1922). He worked a lot with theaters and cinema. Collected one of the best collections of Ukrainian folk art (unfortunately lost). The artist's works are kept in museums and private collections around the world. He died in Venezuela, where he moved after a serious illness.
