History of the Auction House

Founded in 2004, Goldens auction house is one of the leaders in the art market of Ukraine. Throughout its history of its existence, the auction house has been developing various areas of art – classical art, post-war art (underground), contemporary and printed art, object design, sculpture and park sculpture.

The founders of the auction house are Mykhailo and Oleksiy Vasylenko.

Mykhailo Vasylenko - art critic, expert, collector. Mykhailo, in addition to strategic development of the company, is also engaged in curatorial activities, forms auction collections and concepts of exhibition projects. The main direction is the block of classical art, underground, sculpture.

Oleksiy Vasylenko - expert, collector. Oleksiy curates collections of modern art and design. In 2022, Oleksiy left the company.

The auction was initially called Golden Section. In March 2005, the company held its first auction. Then, new directions appeared each year, auctions and exhibitions were held:

  • In 2009, the auction house held the first contemporary art auction in Ukraine. In addition to paintings, the lots included installations, objects, videos, photographs, street art and digital art were presented for the first time in the country
  • In 2010, the first object design auction was held in Ukraine.
  • In 2011, the Design section of the auction house was expanded with the Photography section.
  • Classic. Contemporary. Design auction (2012) was claimed to be the largest and most diverse auction in the history of Ukraine.
  • In 2013, three-day exhibitions and sales of works of classical and modern art of the new “Three days sale” format were launched
  • In 2017, the first auction of printed art called “EDITIONS” took place in Ukraine, at which world-famous names were presented - Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, Fernand Léger, Urte, Tamara de Lempitka and others.
  • In 2019, a new direction was launched - the first exhibition “Ukrainian Modern Sculpture” was held
  • In 2023, the GS-Art Store online store of collectible art was launched.

In 2017, the Goldens auction house changed its location and opened its own gallery space in the centre of Kyiv.

The opening of the gallery space contributed to the development of the exhibition activity of the auction house: personal and group exhibitions (8-10 projects per year) of famous Ukrainian and international artists have been held regularly since 2017.

In November 2019, Goldens auction house celebrated its 15th anniversary with the traditional auction “Classic Underground Contemporary”. The anniversary auction gathered an exceptional selection of works by Ukrainian world-known classic and modern authors in one exhibition space. There were works by Mariia Prymachenko, Mykola Hlushchenko, Serhii Shyshko, Viktor Zaretskyi, Alla Horska, Ivan Marchuk, Borys Plaksii, Valeriia Trubina, Matvii Vaisberh, Oleksandr Roidburd, Illia Chichkan, and others.

During the period of quarantine restrictions in 2020, Goldens did not stop its activities and conducted online auctions. The new auction channel showed a high interest in art and attracted new young collectors to the market. In the following years, the auction house conducts all final auctions in online format on the website of the auction house.

This new approach for the Ukrainian art market allowed to continue to develop collectible Ukrainian art, to attract new fans and collectors in Ukraine and abroad.

In February 2022, the auction house carried out a rebranding and changed its name to Goldens. During Russia’s war against Ukraine, the auction house continued its work and held a number of charity projects, including the “ART CAN HELP” auction in partnership with the Return Alive foundation. With the support of artists and collectors, the works by Mariia Prymachenko, Anatolii Kryvolap, Pavlo Makov, Liubov Panchenko, Roman Minin, as well as “The Garden of Temptation” by Ivan Marchuk, which set an auction record, were proposed for the auction. The work went sold for USD 120,000. Flowing the auction, about UAH 3 million were donated the Ukrainian military.

During 2022, the auction house held several auctions and exhibitions, took part in charity projects and event in support of the military. In 2023, Goldens auction house opens the GS-Art Store online store.
