Press release

In October 2009, the auction house "Golden Section" will hold the first auction of contemporary art in Ukraine. Taking into account the scale and significance of the event, the experts of the auction house selected a collection of works by key personalities of the Ukrainian art space of the last two decades, including such names as Boris Mikhailov, Oleg Golosiy, Alexander Roitburd, Oleg Tistol, Vasily Tsagolov, Alexander Gnilitsky, Ilya Chychkan and many other grandees of domestic contemporary art. The selection also includes the works of a new generation of artists, the so-called "young Ukrainian art", which has already managed to establish itself both in Ukraine and in the international arena.

As conceived by the organizers, the first auction will be somewhat retrospective, so not only works of recent years, but also unique items from the early and mid-90s will be presented here. It is also interesting the presence of objects, installations, photographs and videos in the auction collection. “One of the tasks of our mission is to show people the technical evolution of the ways of expressing contemporary artists,” say the Golden Section experts.

The collection includes more than 100 (one hundred) lots, each of which is of exceptional collection value. Starting prices for works are also determined by the experts of the auction house and range from $2,000 to $50,000.

“The significance of the current, first auction for our relatively young Ukrainian art market can hardly be overestimated. Over the past few years, a sufficient number of serious collectors of contemporary art have appeared in Ukraine, as well as a system of institutions that helps this market segment develop. However, until now there has been no mechanism for legitimizing pricing, which was mostly spontaneous or dependent on the prices of our artists on the international market, without taking into account the symbolic value of the work for the Ukrainian context. With the introduction of the auction pricing mechanism in the domestic system of pricing for contemporary art, we should expect significant positive changes for our entire art space,” say Mikhail and Alexei Vasilenko, co-owners of the Golden Section auction house.

You can buy a catalog, register for the auction, and leave absentee bids for selected lots during the pre-auction exhibition.

You can also view the online version of the catalog, register and order the catalog with delivery on the site of the auction house "Golden Section" www.gs-art.com since October 1.

The pre-auction exhibition will be held: from 17 to 23 October at the Kyiv Art Gallery "Lavra" from 10:00 to 20:00, seven days a week.

The auction will take place on October 24, 2009 at 13.00 in the same place.
