Author Biography
Masson André (1896-1987) - the famous French painter and graphic artist, sculptor, teacher. Born in the city. Balagny-sur-thérain, France. Moved with his family to Brussels (1904). Art education in school painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. He continued his studies at the Paris School of Fine Arts (1912) in the studio of artist P. Baudouin (1844-1931). He received a grant and went to Italy and Switzerland (1914). Admired impressionism and symbolism. The first solo exhibition in the gallery Kanveylera (Paris, 1924). He met with the founder of surrealism A. Breton, who invited the artist to join the group of surrealists. He took part in the International Surrealist Exhibition in Paris (1938). He studied scenography (1933) by issuing several dramatic and musical performances. For a time he lived and worked in the United States (1941-1945). He has lectured on contemporary French art, participated in conferences, exhibitions, and published articles. Masson stay in the US and his work of that period influenced the formation of the American school of abstract expressionism. Winner of the National Art Prize (France, 1954). He devoted a documentary Hremiyona Jean "André Masson and the four elements" (1958). Commissioned by the Ministry of Culture of France performed the ceiling paintings in the Paris theater "Odeon" (1964). He studied book illustration, theatrical costumes and scenery. Participant in numerous retrospective, solo and group exhibitions around the world. His works are in museum collections and private collections are sold at leading auctions.
