Author Biography
Hryhoriy Kruk (1911-1988) is a Ukrainian sculptor and graphic artist. Born in the village Bratyshev, Ivano-Frankivsk Region After finishing the 5th grade in Nizhnev, his teacher V. Lukasevich brought the talented student to a woodworking school in Stanislavov, where he began to study at the carving and carpentry departments. Entered the Lviv school of decorative arts (1931), but was expelled "for lack of talent". Began to visit the workshop of S. Lytvynenko, who had just returned from Paris. S. Lytvynenko commissioned Grigoriy to make a kailo for Ivan Franko's tombstone. Entered the Kraków Academy of Arts (1930), where he studied with Professor K. Liaszka, graduated with honors. He moved from Kraków to Berlin (1937) where he continued his studies at the Academy of Arts. After the war, he moved to Munich. In the 1940s, he was quite famous in the German art environment, and later took one of the first places in Western Europe. He established himself as an original sculptor with his own unique style and static carving forms. Participant of numerous group and personal exhibitions around the world. Sculptures by H. Kruk were purchased by the National Museum in Paris, Stenzel Gallery in Munich.
