Biography
Delone Sonya (real name - Sarah Illinichna (Elievna) Stern) (1885-1979) is a French artist from Ukraine, painter, graphic artist, scenographer. A notable figure of the European avant-garde. Born in Odessa, from 1890 lived in St. Petersburg. Studied at the AH in Karlsruhe (Germany) (1903-1904), from 1905 - at the La Palette Academy in Paris. Together with her husband, artist R. Delone, he developed the principles of scenic orphism (a kind of Cubism). In 1913 he first exhibited his works at the Independent Salon. Many experimented in the field of decorative art, book illustration, and created sketches of costumes and decorations (in particular, for the anthracite S. Diaghilev). Personal exhibitions were held in Stockholm (1916), Bilbao (1919), Berlin (1920). He opened a fashion studio in Paris, where he demonstrated models of clothing and accessories, fabric drawings, interior sketches, etc. (1924). Participated in the Decorative Arts Exhibition in Paris, after which she became famous (1925). For interior decoration of the French pavilion at the World Exhibition in Paris, he received a gold medal (1937). In 1938, a large personal exhibition took place in Amsterdam. Together with her husband, she became the founder of the avant-garde art salon "New Reality" (1939). The first female artist, whose personal retrospective exhibition was still in existence at the Louvre (1964). Large exhibitions also took place in the German Kunsthalle Bielefeld (1958) and the Paris Museum of Contemporary Art (1967-1968). Exhibitions of the artist are regularly held around the world (since the 1960s). Received the highest award of France - Order of the Legion of Honor (1975). Works are preserved in many world churches, in particular, large collections are located in the Center of the Pompidou and the Museum of Contemporary Art (both - Paris). Despite the fact that Sonya Delaunay entered the history of world art as an artist of Ukrainian descent, none of her work exists in state museum collections.
